SaviChat

English and Vietnamese, in real time

SaviChat translates live between English and Vietnamese on video calls, voice calls, and messages, and aloud for in-person conversation. Two features of Vietnamese shape how well it works: tones, and a pronoun system built entirely around relative age.

Tones and speech recognition

Vietnamese is tonal, so the same syllable is several different words depending on pitch. Speech recognition is the first link in the chain and tones are where it is most fragile — a noisy room or a poor connection degrades Vietnamese recognition more than it would a non-tonal language.

Captions matter here. Reading what was recognised is the fastest way to catch a tone error before it propagates into a confusing translation.

Pronouns encode age

Vietnamese pronouns depend on the relative age and relationship of the speakers — there is no neutral 'you'. English supplies none of that, so the translation picks something generic, which is why translated Vietnamese can feel oddly flat to a native speaker even when the meaning is correct.

This matters most with family. Stating relationships explicitly gives the translation something to work with.

What SaviChat does not do

  • No offline mode — live translation needs an internet connection on both sides.

Common questions

Is there an app that translates English and Vietnamese on a call?

Yes. SaviChat translates voice and video calls live between English and Vietnamese in both directions, with captions, and also handles messages and in-person conversation.

Does it handle Vietnamese tones?

It recognises tonal speech, but tones are the most fragile part of recognition — background noise and poor connections cause more errors in Vietnamese than in non-tonal languages. Captions let you catch these quickly.

Why does translated Vietnamese sound impersonal?

Vietnamese pronouns encode the relative age and relationship of the speakers, and English does not supply that, so the translation defaults to something generic. Naming the relationship explicitly improves it.
