Face-to-face mode translates a spoken conversation between two people standing in front of each other, out loud and in real time. You put the phone between you, each person speaks their own language, and it interprets in both directions across 70+ languages.
How to actually use it
Put the phone somewhere you can both be heard — a table between you is better than holding it. Take turns, and leave a beat at the end of a sentence so it knows the thought is finished. Tell the other person what is happening before you start; a phone placed between two people with no explanation is confusing in a way that costs you more time than the explanation would.
Where it works well and where it does not
It is good in a quiet-to-moderate room with two people taking turns: a kitchen table, a clinic waiting room, a shop, a hotel desk, a taxi. It is poor in a loud bar, in a group where several people talk over each other, and anywhere the speech itself is hard to make out. Speech recognition is the first step in the chain, and nothing downstream can recover from a bad transcription.
