Politeness is doing work the translation cannot see
Japanese encodes the relationship between speakers in the grammar itself. English does not, so translating into Japanese means choosing a politeness level from a sentence that never specified one, and translating out of Japanese means discarding information that was deliberately there.
The practical consequence is that a perfectly polite Japanese message can arrive in English sounding neutral or curt, and a friendly English message can arrive in Japanese at the wrong register. Neither is a mistranslation exactly — it is information the target language has no slot for.
Omitted subjects
Japanese leaves out subjects constantly when they are obvious from context. Translation into English has to supply one, and it guesses, which is how you end up with a sentence about the wrong person. If a translated line seems to attribute something oddly, that is the most likely cause and it is worth asking rather than reacting.
